Secrets to Success – Really?

We’ve all seen the blogs, programs and even movies promising to reveal “the secrets to success’ – after all, all we have to do is: Ask, Believe and you’ll surely Receive.

Let’s face it, there are no Secrets to Success, Let’s recap on the fundamental principles we all know but sometimes forget to put into practice.

Clear Vision

“If you don’t know where you’re going any road will take you there”

So you need to know WHERE you’re going, WHY you’re going there (Simon Sinek – start with WHY?) WHAT you hope to achieve HOW you are going to get there-your strategy or plan, together with your set of values that help shape HOW you are going to approach the journey.

The clearer you are on the answer to these questions, the more you increase your chance of success.

 Total Commitment

“The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.” – (WH Murray) or more simply put, you’ve got to be in it to win it, but being in it, is more than just turning up (Woody Allen’s “80% of success is showing up”)

it means being all in; both feet, head, heart and soul.

Perseverance Pays

There’s no denying it, any meaningful progress takes time and dedication, walking the talk, putting in the graft, particularly at the times when you don’t want to, and it’s not easy.   I think this is what Woody Allen really means that 80% success is showing up. It means showing up to do the work, and not allowing distraction to take over.  It means consistently going for a run or the gym if you want to get fit or hit your personal test time. It means writing every day if you want to be a writer, it means caring about what you do if you are serious about making a difference.

Assemble a great team.

“Alone, we can do so little, together we can do so much” (Helen Keller)

I once coined the phrase “one man bands don’t work” and announced it to an audience of 100 solopreneurs!

The reason I said it, is that none of us have a full toolkit, a full skill set and it’s easy to get distracted when you work alone.  So assemble a great team, even if remotely, and see the how together you can go from strength to strength.

Be in the right place at the right time

There’s no getting away from it, you can have the best laid out plans, total commitment and put in the dedicated work, but that may not be enough; for if your endeavour is at the wrong place or the wrong time it many never take off.  There would be little point trying to launch a fax business nowadays, products and markets have their life cycles, if you are too early, or too late it rarely works out.

You need clear sight to see what is actually going on in the market, as opposed to seeing what you want to see, ultimately it is your decision but do your research, ask for objective feedback.

So where are the secrets?

There are none really, it’ a great marketing ploy, and it lets us off the hook for not performing because we didn’t know the secrets, but if there is a secret, and it’s the one that no one wants you to know, and that’s to trust yourself more, to develop your intuition, to trust your hunches and feelings, and to do remain true to yourself along the way.
